Rite of Temporary Commitment
The Poverello Society of
Holy Family Parish
Jacksonville, Florida

Presider: Moved by the power of the gospel, we experience the call to always begin anew and to bring about a continuing inner conversion, so that we may be conformed to Christ and with Him be given over to the sevice of our gracious Creator, and of our Borthers and Sisters in this Community of St. Francis of Assisi. In this journey toward permanent commitment, perseverance is a gift of God. Let us pray that as we progress in loving one another, we will remain faithful to the Lord to the end.

(silent prayer)

All: Lord, look kindly on us whom you have called to the holiness of the gospel life after the example of St. Francis. Grant us the grace to fulfill our commitments to the gospel life which we here willingly embrace with joy and generosity. We ask this through Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior, AMEN!

(each member in turn stands and makes her/his profession aloud)

I, ________________, MAKE FOR ONE YEAR MY COMMITMENT TO FAITHFULLY OBSERVE THE GOSPEL OF OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST. I DO THIS HERE IN THE COMPANY OF MY FRANCISCAN BROTHERS AND SISTERS AND I CALL AS MY WITNESSES ST. FRANCIS AND ST. CLARE, ALL THE SAINTS OF THE FRANCISCAN FAMILY FROM ALL AGES. IN LIVING OUT THIS COMMITMENT, I WILL STRIVE EARNESTLY TO SEEK AND SERVE THE LORD JESUS IN THE COMPANY OF THESE BROTHERS AND SISTERS WHOM THE LORD HAS GIVEN ME. THANKS BE TO GOD!

(after each member has made her/his profession)

Presider: On behalf of the Church, I accept your temporary commitments to the gospel life after the example of St. Francis. All your Brothers and Sister unite with me in thanking God for the gift you are and the gifts you bring. In the words of our Father, Francis, I admonish you—

May whoever observes all this
be filled in heaven with the blessing of the most high Father,
and on earth with that of his beloved Son,
together with the Holy Spirit, the Comforter,
and all the powers of heaven and all the saints.

All Creatures of Our God and King
(The Canticle of the Sun)

All Creatures of our God and King,
Lift up your voice and with us sing:
Alleluia! Alleluia!
O burning sun with golden beam
And silver moon with softer gleam:
Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!

O rushing wind and breezes soft,
O clouds that ride the winds aloft:
Alleluia! Alleluia!
O rising morn, in praise rejoice,
O lights of evening find a voice:
Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!

O flowing waters, pure and clear,
Make music for you Lord to hear:
Alleluia! Alleluia!
O rising morn in praise rejoice.
O lights of evening find a voice!
Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!

Dear mother earth who day by day
Unfolds rich blessings on your way,
Alleluia! Alleluia!
O fire so masterful and bright,
Providing us with warmth and light,
Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!

O every one of tender heart,
Forgiving others take your part,
Alleluia! Alleluia!
All you who pain and sorrow bear,
Praise God and cast on God your care.
Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!

Let all things their Creator bless,
And worship God in humbleness,
Alleluia! Alleluia!
O praise the Father, praise the Son,
And praise the Spirit, Three in One!
Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!

Presider: Hear our prayers, O Lord,
And grant that these, our Brothers and Sisters,
Who have solemnly committed to spend their daily lives
In the service of others,
May imbue their earthly affairs with a genuine Gospel spirit.
We ask this through Christ our Lord.
Amen!

Conclusion: May the Lord bless us and keep us!
May the Lord let His face shine upon us and be gracious to us.
May the Lord look upon us kindly and give us His peace!
And may almighty God bless us all + in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit!

All: Amen!
